Novelista, dramaturgo y líder sionista inglés. Hijo de inmigrantes de Europa del Este, Zangwill se inspiró en sus propias experiencias para escribir Los hijos del ghetto (1892), que concitó gran interés. Su novela picaresca The King of Schnorrers [Rey de los Schnorrers] (1894) relata las aventuras de un pícaro del s. XVIII, mientras que Dreamers of the Ghetto [Soñadores del ghetto] (1898) contiene ensayos sobre ilustres personalidades judías. La metáfora de EE.UU. como un crisol en el que distintas nacionalidades se transforman en una nueva raza procede de su obra The Melting Pot [El crisol] (1908). Se le recuerda como uno de los primeros escritores ingleses que reflexionan sobre la vida de los inmigrantes judíos.
